Twitter comes of age in the democracy
Some distinction should be made here. This was citizen media at its best (farther stipulations on this below). This really can't be considered an example of true
crowdsourcing.
Journalists, both (all) kinds, made significant contributions and enhancements to the Twitter feeds. So did citizen participants who had a stake in getting their story out. The authorities were able to rely on
MSM for their presentations.
It would appear that a great deal of the utility of Twitter in getting out the other side of the story here comes from its young age. Had the medium been mature enough for adoption by the authorities, they surely would have put on just as much of a show on Twitter.
